Gas Fireplace Repair in Sherman Oaks, Checked Before It Runs Again

A quake, a nearby fire or smoke can leave a gas fireplace dead at the switch, losing its pilot or burning a lazy yellow flame. We find the part at fault and test it safe.

What's Included

Shaking can separate a vent joint, a surge can kill an ignition board, and ash can clog a pilot. Diagnosis runs in order: gas supply, pilot and thermocouple or thermopile, igniter and board, valve, burner, then every reachable vent joint. Failed parts are replaced with ones made for that unit, the flame is checked against the maker's drawing, and carbon monoxide is tested afterward.

Pilot light and ignition system repair
Thermocouple and thermopile replacement
Gas valve diagnosis and replacement
Direct-vent and ventless unit service
Remote control and wall switch repair
CO safety test after every repair

What to Check First, and What to Leave to Us

If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company from outside. That comes before anything else. If there is no gas smell and the fireplace is dead at the switch, keeps losing its pilot or shows a tall yellow flame, turn it off at the valve and look at three things. Is the wall switch or remote working, with fresh batteries? Is the gas on to the rest of the house? Did anything happen recently, such as a quake, a power surge in a storm, a nearby fire or heavy smoke? That last answer matters most. A strong quake can shift a gas fireplace or its vent pipe enough to separate a joint, and a power surge can damage an electronic ignition board. Smoke and ash can clog the pilot and the vent cap. Do not take the unit apart yourself, and do not keep relighting a pilot that goes out, because a pilot that will not hold is often the safety system working as it should.

When you book, tell us the make and model if you can find the label, usually behind the lower grille, and what happened before it stopped working. That lets us bring the likely parts.

How We Diagnose and Repair a Gas Unit

We work through a gas fireplace in a set order, because the parts depend on each other. Gas supply and pressure first. Then the pilot: its flame, the thermocouple or thermopile it heats, and on newer units the igniter and the control board. Then the valve and the main burner. Then the vent, inside and out, which after a quake means checking every joint we can reach and the seal at the wall or roof. We replace the part that failed with one made for that unit, since gas fireplaces are tested and listed as a whole and off-brand parts can void that. After the repair, we run the unit, check the flame picture against the maker's drawing, and test for carbon monoxide at the unit and in the room.

Most gas repairs in Sherman Oaks are finished in one visit when the part is common. Older or less common units can need a part ordered. The quote comes before the work, in writing, and the visit note lists what failed and why, which matters if the cause was a covered event such as a fire or a power surge.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Sherman Oaks

Many Sherman Oaks chimneys went up in the building boom after the war and rode out the 1994 Northridge earthquake, some with repairs that only covered the cracks. A chimney fire in one of those flues often opens old damage along with new. After any fire or strong shake here, we start with a camera inspection before anyone talks about price.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Burbank

Burbank is its own city with its own building department, so a rebuild or gas insert here is permitted through Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older Burbank chimneys are unreinforced brick, the type most likely to crack in a quake or a hot flue fire. We take care of the permit when a repair needs one.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Canoga Park

Canoga Park lies a few miles from where the 1994 Northridge quake struck, and brick chimneys across the west Valley cracked, twisted or fell that morning. Many were patched rather than rebuilt. Because the neighborhood is part of the City of Los Angeles, a rebuild here goes through the city's building department, and we handle that step when a repair calls for it.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Encino

Encino houses often have more than one fireplace, plus an outdoor fire pit or fireplace, and a fire in one flue does not mean the others are fine. When one chimney on a property burns, we look at every flue that shares the stack. The report lists each one separately, so repairs and any claim stay clear.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Studio City

Canyon houses in Studio City often have chimneys that are hard to reach and easy to forget, sometimes with the only clear view from a neighbor's yard. After a chimney fire, the cap and crown on those stacks can hide damage for a whole season. We photograph them from the roof, since a look from the street misses too much.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Woodland Hills

Woodland Hills sits near hills where the 2018 Woolsey fire burned, and many owners here have lived through smoke, ash and evacuation warnings. After a nearby fire, we check caps, crowns and flues for ash and ember damage even when the house itself was untouched. Factory-built fireplaces get checked against their own listing.
