What's Included

Smoke leaking through joints during a fire, stair-step cracks after a quake, or a crown split by wildfire heat each show how deep the damage goes. We grind failed joints and repoint with mortar softer than the brick, replace spalled brick to match, and rebuild crowns with a slope and drip edge. When the stack itself has moved, we say plainly that repointing will not hold.

Tuckpointing and repointing services
Brick replacement with color matching

Reading the Brick After a Fire or Quake

Masonry damage after a chimney fire usually shows on the outside a few days later. Look for smoke or a smoky smell coming through mortar joints during a fire, white or brown staining on the brick near the top, a crown with new cracks running out from the flue, or bricks with faces popped off. Heat inside the flue pushes outward, and when the liner cracks, the brick takes heat it was never meant to carry. Earthquake damage looks different: stair-step cracks along the mortar, a horizontal crack at the roofline where the upper chimney rocked, or a stack that has twisted or leans a little. The 1994 Northridge earthquake left many Valley chimneys with exactly that pattern, and some were patched without the cause being fixed. Wildfire heat is the third kind, usually limited to the crown and the top courses, which can crack or spall when a nearby fire runs hot.

Each pattern tells us how deep to look. Staining and popped faces near the top often mean the liner failed and the masonry around it is next. A crack at the roofline means the chimney above it may be loose. We photograph each one and match it to the inside findings from the camera, so the repair covers the cause, not only the visible mark.

How We Repair Masonry That Took a Hit

Repointing comes first where joints have opened. We grind out the damaged mortar to a sound depth and fill it with a mortar softer than the brick, so future movement cracks the joint and not the brick. Older Valley chimneys often need a softer, lime-rich mix than modern cement, and we match the color so the repair does not stand out. Bricks that spalled or cracked through are cut out and replaced with brick close in size and color. A crown with heat cracks gets a proper repair or a new crown with a slope and an overhang so water drops clear of the brick. Coating a cracked crown with sealant buys a season at most.

When the damage is in the upper chimney and the stack has moved, repointing will not hold, and we say so. That is the line between masonry repair and a rebuild, and the quote spells out which side your chimney is on. Every masonry job in Sherman Oaks is quoted in writing after the inspection, and fresh mortar waits for mild weather so it cures before the heat or the rain. Photos of the finished work go into the same file as the damage photos, which helps with an insurer and later with a sale.

Chimney Masonry Repair in Sherman Oaks

Many Sherman Oaks chimneys went up in the building boom after the war and rode out the 1994 Northridge earthquake, some with repairs that only covered the cracks. A chimney fire in one of those flues often opens old damage along with new. After any fire or strong shake here, we start with a camera inspection before anyone talks about price.

Chimney Masonry Repair in Burbank

Burbank is its own city with its own building department, so a rebuild or gas insert here is permitted through Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older Burbank chimneys are unreinforced brick, the type most likely to crack in a quake or a hot flue fire. We take care of the permit when a repair needs one.

Chimney Masonry Repair in Canoga Park

Canoga Park lies a few miles from where the 1994 Northridge quake struck, and brick chimneys across the west Valley cracked, twisted or fell that morning. Many were patched rather than rebuilt. Because the neighborhood is part of the City of Los Angeles, a rebuild here goes through the city's building department, and we handle that step when a repair calls for it.

Chimney Masonry Repair in Encino

Encino houses often have more than one fireplace, plus an outdoor fire pit or fireplace, and a fire in one flue does not mean the others are fine. When one chimney on a property burns, we look at every flue that shares the stack. The report lists each one separately, so repairs and any claim stay clear.

Chimney Masonry Repair in Studio City

Canyon houses in Studio City often have chimneys that are hard to reach and easy to forget, sometimes with the only clear view from a neighbor's yard. After a chimney fire, the cap and crown on those stacks can hide damage for a whole season. We photograph them from the roof, since a look from the street misses too much.

Chimney Masonry Repair in Woodland Hills

Woodland Hills sits near hills where the 2018 Woolsey fire burned, and many owners here have lived through smoke, ash and evacuation warnings. After a nearby fire, we check caps, crowns and flues for ash and ember damage even when the house itself was untouched. Factory-built fireplaces get checked against their own listing.
