What's Included
A gas fireplace that soots is burning wrong: logs out of place, clogged ports, or a vent cap blocked by ash after nearby smoke. We take the unit apart in the maker's order, clean glass, logs, burner and pilot, reset the logs to the drawing, clear the vent cap, and test for carbon monoxide with the flame running. Anything that needs repair goes on a separate quote.
When a Gas Fireplace Starts to Soot
A gas fireplace burning as designed leaves very little behind. Black glass, dark tips on the logs, or a smoky smell mean the flame is not getting the mix of gas and air it needs. The usual causes are logs moved out of position after a cleaning, burner ports clogged with dust or debris, a vent cap blocked by a nest or by ash, or a vent pipe that separated. Wildfire smoke adds a cause of its own. During and after the January 2025 fires, many direct-vent caps on Valley houses collected ash and soot on the outside, and some units started to burn dirty afterward. A gas fireplace that soots is not only messy. It can be spilling combustion gases where they should not go, which is why we treat it as a fault, not a cleaning job.
If yours sooted suddenly, turn it off at the valve and leave it off until it is checked. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company from outside. For soot and a smoky smell with no gas smell, book a service and tell us when it started and whether anything changed, such as a cleaning, a storm or a fire nearby.
What the Service Covers
We shut off the gas, let the unit cool, and take it apart in the order the maker lays out. The glass comes off and gets cleaned with a product made for ceramic glass, since household cleaners etch it. The logs come out and are brushed, and any cracked or crumbling log is noted. The burner and ports are cleaned, the pilot assembly is cleaned and checked, and the logs go back in the exact position the manual shows, because a log a half inch off can be enough to soot the glass again. Then we check the vent run and the cap outside, clearing ash, debris or nests. With the unit running, we check the flame, look for spillage at the draft hood on units that have one, and test for carbon monoxide in the room.
You get a short note listing what we cleaned, what we found and whether anything needs a repair. In Sherman Oaks, the service is usually done in one visit. If the soot traced back to a failed part or a vent problem, that goes on a separate quote so you can decide on it.

Gas Fireplace Cleaning in Sherman Oaks
Many Sherman Oaks chimneys went up in the building boom after the war and rode out the 1994 Northridge earthquake, some with repairs that only covered the cracks. A chimney fire in one of those flues often opens old damage along with new. After any fire or strong shake here, we start with a camera inspection before anyone talks about price.

Gas Fireplace Cleaning in Burbank
Burbank is its own city with its own building department, so a rebuild or gas insert here is permitted through Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older Burbank chimneys are unreinforced brick, the type most likely to crack in a quake or a hot flue fire. We take care of the permit when a repair needs one.

Gas Fireplace Cleaning in Canoga Park
Canoga Park lies a few miles from where the 1994 Northridge quake struck, and brick chimneys across the west Valley cracked, twisted or fell that morning. Many were patched rather than rebuilt. Because the neighborhood is part of the City of Los Angeles, a rebuild here goes through the city's building department, and we handle that step when a repair calls for it.

Gas Fireplace Cleaning in Encino
Encino houses often have more than one fireplace, plus an outdoor fire pit or fireplace, and a fire in one flue does not mean the others are fine. When one chimney on a property burns, we look at every flue that shares the stack. The report lists each one separately, so repairs and any claim stay clear.

Gas Fireplace Cleaning in Studio City
Canyon houses in Studio City often have chimneys that are hard to reach and easy to forget, sometimes with the only clear view from a neighbor's yard. After a chimney fire, the cap and crown on those stacks can hide damage for a whole season. We photograph them from the roof, since a look from the street misses too much.

Gas Fireplace Cleaning in Woodland Hills
Woodland Hills sits near hills where the 2018 Woolsey fire burned, and many owners here have lived through smoke, ash and evacuation warnings. After a nearby fire, we check caps, crowns and flues for ash and ember damage even when the house itself was untouched. Factory-built fireplaces get checked against their own listing.
