Fireplace Cleaning in Sherman Oaks, Down to What the Smoke Left

Smoke and soot do not stop at the flue. We clean the firebox, glass doors, hearth and surround, and note any heat marks we find so they get looked at, not painted over.

What's Included

Smoke from a flue fire or a wildfire leaves acidic residue on brick, stone, tile, glass and mantel. Each surface gets the method it can take, under covers and with the opening sealed. Stains that look like heat damage are photographed and noted rather than scrubbed away, so the inspection knows where to look. Wood fireplaces and gas units both get the same careful visit.

Firebox ash and soot removal
Glass door cleaning and gasket check
Hearth stone and surround cleaning
Smoke stain removal from masonry
Gas fireplace log and burner cleaning
HEPA-filtered vacuum for zero mess

What Smoke and Soot Leave Around a Fireplace

When a fire runs up a flue, or a fireplace spills smoke into the room, the mess sits in more places than the firebox. Soot settles on the face of the brick or stone above the opening, on the mantel, inside the glass doors and along the hearth. Wildfire smoke is different again. During the large fires in January 2025, homes miles from the flames had fine ash drift down open flues and settle on the damper and firebox floor. Both kinds of residue are acidic and stain if they sit. Cleaning a fireplace after either event is careful work: we cover the floor and furniture, seal the opening, vacuum loose ash with a filtered machine, then clean each surface with the method it can take. Brick and natural stone get a different treatment from tile, and painted surrounds get the gentlest of all.

While we clean, we look. A brown or white bloom on the brick above the opening, a crack in the firebox panels, or a mantel that feels hot near the edge can mean heat got where it should not. We do not scrub those away and move on. They go in the notes with a photo, so the chimney inspection that follows knows where to look. In Sherman Oaks, many fireplace cleanings after a fire are booked together with the sweep and camera scan, which saves a second visit and keeps the record in one place.

Cleaning Wood and Gas Fireplaces After an Event

A wood fireplace is cleaned from the floor up: ash out, firebox brushed, damper cleaned and checked for movement, glass doors cleaned inside and out, and the gasket on those doors checked. A gas fireplace or gas log set needs a different hand. Soot on its glass usually means the flame was burning dirty, from logs out of place, a blocked port or a venting problem, and wiping it off without asking why only brings it back. So we clean the glass, logs and burner, and we write down where the soot was heaviest, which often points at the cause. If the gas unit sat through wildfire smoke with its vent open, we check the vent cap for ash.

If you plan to claim smoke damage, photograph the room and fireplace before we start, and tell us. We take our own before and after photos too, and the visit note lists what was cleaned and what was found, so an adjuster sees the condition you started with. Cleaning does not decide whether the fireplace is safe to use. That decision comes from the inspection, and we will say plainly if the cleaning turned up something that needs one first.

Fireplace Cleaning in Sherman Oaks

Many Sherman Oaks chimneys went up in the building boom after the war and rode out the 1994 Northridge earthquake, some with repairs that only covered the cracks. A chimney fire in one of those flues often opens old damage along with new. After any fire or strong shake here, we start with a camera inspection before anyone talks about price.

Fireplace Cleaning in Burbank

Burbank is its own city with its own building department, so a rebuild or gas insert here is permitted through Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older Burbank chimneys are unreinforced brick, the type most likely to crack in a quake or a hot flue fire. We take care of the permit when a repair needs one.

Fireplace Cleaning in Canoga Park

Canoga Park lies a few miles from where the 1994 Northridge quake struck, and brick chimneys across the west Valley cracked, twisted or fell that morning. Many were patched rather than rebuilt. Because the neighborhood is part of the City of Los Angeles, a rebuild here goes through the city's building department, and we handle that step when a repair calls for it.

Fireplace Cleaning in Encino

Encino houses often have more than one fireplace, plus an outdoor fire pit or fireplace, and a fire in one flue does not mean the others are fine. When one chimney on a property burns, we look at every flue that shares the stack. The report lists each one separately, so repairs and any claim stay clear.

Fireplace Cleaning in Studio City

Canyon houses in Studio City often have chimneys that are hard to reach and easy to forget, sometimes with the only clear view from a neighbor's yard. After a chimney fire, the cap and crown on those stacks can hide damage for a whole season. We photograph them from the roof, since a look from the street misses too much.

Fireplace Cleaning in Woodland Hills

Woodland Hills sits near hills where the 2018 Woolsey fire burned, and many owners here have lived through smoke, ash and evacuation warnings. After a nearby fire, we check caps, crowns and flues for ash and ember damage even when the house itself was untouched. Factory-built fireplaces get checked against their own listing.
