Fireplace Remodel in Sherman Oaks After the Smoke Clears
When a fire stained the face, charred a mantel or cracked the hearth, the repair can be a chance to rebuild the fireplace the right way, with clearances that stop it happening again.

What's Included
When fire stained the face beyond cleaning or charred the mantel, the demolition for repair is half a remodel already. We rebuild the face, hearth and mantel at the clearances the fireplace needs, so the next big fire does not repeat the damage. Some owners convert to a gas insert instead, or close the opening and install a direct-vent gas fireplace for $4,500 to $9,050.
When Damage Turns Into a Remodel
Some fire and smoke damage stops at the firebox. Some reaches the room: brick or stone on the face stained so deeply it will not clean, a wood mantel scorched on its underside, a tile hearth cracked from heat or from a log that rolled out, paint and drywall around the opening blistered. When the face has to come off anyway, a remodel costs less than people expect, because much of the demolition is already part of the repair. It is also the moment to fix the cause. A mantel that charred was usually too close to the opening for the size of fire the fireplace was used for. A hearth that cracked may have been too short or too thin. The remodel puts the new surround, mantel and hearth at the clearances the fireplace requires, so the next big fire does not repeat the damage.
Before anything is designed, the firebox and chimney have to be cleared for use. A new stone face on a fireplace with a cracked liner only hides the problem behind nicer material. So in Sherman Oaks a remodel after a fire starts with the Level 2 inspection, and the design follows what the chimney can safely support.
Choices, From a New Face to a New Fireplace
There are three common paths. Keep the wood fireplace and rebuild the face, hearth and mantel, with noncombustible material where the clearances call for it and wood where it is allowed. Convert the fireplace to gas with an insert, which goes into the existing firebox with a new liner, and costs $2,800 to $5,650 installed for the insert itself. Or close the old opening and install a direct-vent gas fireplace in the same wall or a new location, which runs $4,500 to $9,050 and does not need the masonry chimney at all. That last option suits owners who no longer trust a chimney after a fire, or who have a chimney that would need a rebuild before it could be used again.
We price the fireplace work in writing after the inspection and a measure of the room. Finishes such as stone or tile are chosen with you and priced as part of the quote. Where a permit is needed for gas work or a new opening, we handle it. If insurance is covering part of the damage, the quote separates the repair of what was damaged from the upgrades you choose, which keeps the claim clear.

Fireplace Remodel in Sherman Oaks
Many Sherman Oaks chimneys went up in the building boom after the war and rode out the 1994 Northridge earthquake, some with repairs that only covered the cracks. A chimney fire in one of those flues often opens old damage along with new. After any fire or strong shake here, we start with a camera inspection before anyone talks about price.

Fireplace Remodel in Burbank
Burbank is its own city with its own building department, so a rebuild or gas insert here is permitted through Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older Burbank chimneys are unreinforced brick, the type most likely to crack in a quake or a hot flue fire. We take care of the permit when a repair needs one.

Fireplace Remodel in Canoga Park
Canoga Park lies a few miles from where the 1994 Northridge quake struck, and brick chimneys across the west Valley cracked, twisted or fell that morning. Many were patched rather than rebuilt. Because the neighborhood is part of the City of Los Angeles, a rebuild here goes through the city's building department, and we handle that step when a repair calls for it.

Fireplace Remodel in Encino
Encino houses often have more than one fireplace, plus an outdoor fire pit or fireplace, and a fire in one flue does not mean the others are fine. When one chimney on a property burns, we look at every flue that shares the stack. The report lists each one separately, so repairs and any claim stay clear.

Fireplace Remodel in Studio City
Canyon houses in Studio City often have chimneys that are hard to reach and easy to forget, sometimes with the only clear view from a neighbor's yard. After a chimney fire, the cap and crown on those stacks can hide damage for a whole season. We photograph them from the roof, since a look from the street misses too much.

Fireplace Remodel in Woodland Hills
Woodland Hills sits near hills where the 2018 Woolsey fire burned, and many owners here have lived through smoke, ash and evacuation warnings. After a nearby fire, we check caps, crowns and flues for ash and ember damage even when the house itself was untouched. Factory-built fireplaces get checked against their own listing.
