Fireplace Inserts in Sherman Oaks When the Old Flue Cannot Be Trusted
After a chimney fire many owners do not want an open wood fire again. An insert with its own liner lets the fireplace work again without relying on the damaged clay tile.

What's Included
A cracked clay liner needs replacing anyway, and an insert pairs with that repair: a closed firebox venting through its own stainless liner, so the old tile no longer carries the fire. Gas inserts run $2,800 to $5,650 installed in an existing fireplace and end creosote altogether. Wood inserts burn cleaner than open fires, and electric needs no venting while a chimney waits for its rebuild.
Why an Insert Often Follows a Chimney Fire
A chimney fire usually damages the clay tile liner, and the fix for a damaged liner is a new one, most often a stainless steel liner run down the old flue. An insert pairs naturally with that repair. It is a closed firebox, gas, wood or electric, that slides into the existing fireplace and vents through its own liner, so the old tile no longer carries the fire. For an owner who just watched smoke pour out of the top of the chimney, that matters. A gas insert also removes the cause of most chimney fires: there is no creosote from burning gas. A wood insert burns much cleaner and hotter than an open fire and needs regular sweeping, but it puts far more heat into the room. An electric insert needs no venting at all, so it suits a chimney that would need a rebuild before any fire could go into it again.
The insert decision comes after the inspection, not before. If the masonry is sound and only the liner failed, any of the three works. If the chimney needs a rebuild, electric now, or a direct-vent fireplace elsewhere, can be the faster route back to a working hearth.
Cost, Fitting and the First Fire
A gas insert installed in an existing fireplace runs $2,800 to $5,650. That includes the insert, the liner from the insert to the top of the chimney, the connection to a gas line already at the fireplace, and the surround panel that closes the gap around it. The spread comes from the size and style of unit and the height of the chimney. Running a new gas line, electrical work for a blower and any repair to the firebox are quoted separately in writing. Wood and electric inserts are quoted after we measure the firebox. We take the measurements during the inspection, so the quote comes back with the inspection report.
Fitting usually takes a day. Gas work in Sherman Oaks and nearby cities is permitted where the city requires it, and we arrange the inspection. Before you light it, we walk you through the controls, the shutoff and what normal looks like, and we test for carbon monoxide with the unit running. You keep the manual, the warranty card and photos of the install with your fire damage file, which closes the record from the fire to the fix.

Fireplace Inserts in Sherman Oaks
Many Sherman Oaks chimneys went up in the building boom after the war and rode out the 1994 Northridge earthquake, some with repairs that only covered the cracks. A chimney fire in one of those flues often opens old damage along with new. After any fire or strong shake here, we start with a camera inspection before anyone talks about price.

Fireplace Inserts in Burbank
Burbank is its own city with its own building department, so a rebuild or gas insert here is permitted through Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older Burbank chimneys are unreinforced brick, the type most likely to crack in a quake or a hot flue fire. We take care of the permit when a repair needs one.

Fireplace Inserts in Canoga Park
Canoga Park lies a few miles from where the 1994 Northridge quake struck, and brick chimneys across the west Valley cracked, twisted or fell that morning. Many were patched rather than rebuilt. Because the neighborhood is part of the City of Los Angeles, a rebuild here goes through the city's building department, and we handle that step when a repair calls for it.

Fireplace Inserts in Encino
Encino houses often have more than one fireplace, plus an outdoor fire pit or fireplace, and a fire in one flue does not mean the others are fine. When one chimney on a property burns, we look at every flue that shares the stack. The report lists each one separately, so repairs and any claim stay clear.

Fireplace Inserts in Studio City
Canyon houses in Studio City often have chimneys that are hard to reach and easy to forget, sometimes with the only clear view from a neighbor's yard. After a chimney fire, the cap and crown on those stacks can hide damage for a whole season. We photograph them from the roof, since a look from the street misses too much.

Fireplace Inserts in Woodland Hills
Woodland Hills sits near hills where the 2018 Woolsey fire burned, and many owners here have lived through smoke, ash and evacuation warnings. After a nearby fire, we check caps, crowns and flues for ash and ember damage even when the house itself was untouched. Factory-built fireplaces get checked against their own listing.
